How to Load a Kayak Into a Truck Bed With Only One Strap!

Securing your kayak when transporting can be one of the most technical aspects of

owning a kayak. Ensuring your kayak is transported safely and securely helps you have extra peace of mind when you're heading to and from the water. We have been loading up kayaks in truck beds for years and have developed a tried and true technique that makes loading and securing your kayak a breeze. All it takes is three steps!

Remove Gear:

We start every load up with removing all the important gear on the kayak. It is ideal to remove the seat, drive, paddles and other loose fishing gear before loading up your yak. This makes it easier to load the kayak by reducing its weight as well as keeping all your valuable items secured inside the vehicle.

Load Your Kayak:

Start the load up process by using the skid plates that are included on most Hobie kayak models to get your kayak from the wheels to the bed of your truck. The skid plates help protect the kayak and add extra grip to help you securely load your kayak.

Scupper Hole Strap Down:

Once your kayak is in the truck all you gotta do is strap it down! Before you get underway make sure you have the correct straps. We always recommend using cam straps instead of ratchets when securing a kayak. This is due to the ability ratchets have to strap down too tight, possibly resulting in damage to your kayak. Strapping a kayak with cam straps eliminates the risk of damage due to an over tensioned strap during transport. Now that you have the correct strap, start by placing the buckle in the middle of the kayak. Then lace the strap through a tide down point near the rear of the bed, and lace the rest of the strap through both scupper holes in the rear of the kayak. Return the strap to the opposite tie down point, tighten it up, and you're on your way! It's that easy!

Come by Fast Lane kayaking and we'll show you how easy kayaking can be!
