If you’ve been looking at getting a Garmin Force Current or Garmin live scope system outfitted on your kayak, this is the video for you.
Here’s our resident kayak researcher, Chris Minnick, going over his fully rigged Hobie iTrek 9. This lightweight inflatable is completely kitted out with a Garmin LiveScope system and the brand new Garmin Force Current. After a few months of serious time on San Diego lakes, he’s gathered real data on battery life, screen size, power draw, and how to actually use these tools to catch more fish.
He’s running a 9-inch Garmin display paired with the GLS 10 black box and LVS34 transducer. For kayak anglers researching screen size, nine inches is the sweet spot—big enough to clearly see fish and structure without taking up too much deck space. The black box pulls more power than the screen, so he runs two Nocqua 20Ah batteries and comfortably fishes 7–8 hour days with the ability to extend his fishing time with an additional 20ah. When the screen dies, he swaps it's battery out with a fresh one and keeps fishing.
With the Force Current’s 20 speeds and Spot-Lock, wind is no longer a factor. He runs at high speed to reposition across the lake, then switches back to MirageDrive for quiet, efficient fishing. Need to change lures? Hit anchor lock and the motor will hold you in place.
Adding Live Scope has changed his search techniques for locating fishy areas. Instead of blind casting to locate fish, he knows there's fish there. Now all he has to do is figure out what they want to eat. Live transducer systems are a great way to take the guess work out of finding new spots.
